The Virginia Flyover - McAfee Knob - Appalachian Trail

Question: When was the University of Virginia’s first commencement?

Answer: In 1829. Early students asked the Board of Visitors to publicly recognize their achievement. The board directed in 1827 that a “public day” be held, allowing the names of degree recipients to be read aloud. The first commencement was held in the Rotunda, with later ceremonies relocated to the Annex and then to Old Cabell Hall.
