Question: What exactly was a “redoubt” in the Revolutionary War?

Answer: A redoubt was an enclosed earthwork fort, usually square or many-sided, built away from an army’s main defensive lines to guard a key approach. At Yorktown, Redoubts 9 and 10 anchored the British left flank. Capturing them let the Allies extend their siege lines and bring artillery within close range of Cornwallis’ army.
