Article Icon 1Groups Campaign For, Against Redistricting

Early voting began two weeks ago on a constitutional referendum that would allow state lawmakers to gerrymander congressional districts to favor Democrats ahead of November’s elections. In-person voting ends on April 21.

The Virginia Public Access Project (VPAP) reported that early voting turnout so far has been heavier in traditionally Republican districts. Nearly 110,000 people have voted in the five districts currently represented by Republicans, while fewer than 72,000 people have voted early in the six districts held by Democrats.

VPAP also reported that redistricting advocates have raised more than $22 million, while the group Virginians for Fair Maps—which opposes changing the constitution—has brought in $495,000.

The campaigns have generated some misleading ads, including mailers and billboards that present false statements about the positions on the issue held by Gov. Abigail Spanberger and President Donald Trump.

More than 100 women who served in the military gathered for the first-ever pinning ceremony at the Virginia War Memorial in Richmond as part of Virginia’s Women Veterans Week.

The history of women in the military is a history of service given fully,” Gov. Abigail Spanberger said, congratulating the veterans on their tenacity. “It’s a history of women who are oftentimes told there were things they could not do, and who did them anyway.”

Army veteran Donna Golloway said the event inspired her. “It makes you want to go out in your community and do more.

Over 110,000 women veterans live in Virginia, more per capita than in any other state.

Article Icon 1Attorney General Demands Refunds

Virginia Attorney General Jay Jones joined a coalition of 18 state attorneys general in calling on Congress to refund money collected by federal government tariffs since April of 2025.

The coalition—headed by New York Attorney General Letitia James—argues that tariffs resulted in more than $166 billion collected from more than 330,000 American businesses and individuals across 53 million shipments.

The Supreme Court ruled last month that the tariffs are illegal. “We are just demanding that the money that is owed to us come back to the people who earned it,” Jones said.

Virginia’s two U.S. senators have signed on to a bill that would require the government to pay out tariff refunds.
