Not Guilty Plea in Danville Attack

The man accused of attacking Danville City Council member Lee Vogler last year pleaded not guilty to all three charges against him. The trial is set to begin on April 20.

Prosecutors say Shotsie Michael Buck-Hayes attacked Vogler at his office last summer and set him on fire. The councilman spent three months enduring surgeries and recovering in the burn unit at UNC Chapel Hill.

Vogler has since returned to his duties on the city council. Buck-Hayes told police after his arrest that his wife had been having an affair with the councilman.

When Easters Rocked UVA 

Easter Monday was once part of a week-long party that later became a bacchanalia on the University of Virginia campus.

UVA students, who called the week Easters, began to celebrate in 1898 with sedate events that they could only attend if they vowed not to drink.

However, by the mid-1970s Easters revolved around alcohol. It was eventually described as the “Best Party in America.” In 1976, an estimated 15,000 people, many from outside Charlottesville, attended the event, drank heavily, and wallowed in a mud hole.

UVA discontinued Easters in 1982, encouraging students to spend the week focusing on more academic pursuits.
