Judge Blocks Digital Gateway

A circuit court judge blocked a proposed rezoning to allow construction of the proposed 22-million-square-foot Prince William Digital Gateway data center project.

The county’s Board of Supervisors approved the zoning change in December 2023 by a 4-3 vote. In her decision last week, Judge Kimberly Irving wrote, “This Court finds that the advertised notice provided by the County did not comply with either the State or County code.”

A group of 12 residents had sued to block the development, which, if built according to current plans, would be the largest data center in the world.

The ruling halts the process for now, but the county, the developers, or both may appeal within the next two weeks.

Spanberger Sketches Schools Plan

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Abigail Spanberger released what she called her “Strengthening Virginia Schools Plan” during an appearance at a high school in Portsmouth.

“We need to raise teachers’ salaries and bring and attract people into the profession and ensure every educator has the respect they deserve for the incredible work they do,” Spanberger said.

Her proposal includes spending more to fix school buildings, making college more affordable, and implementing telehealth programs to deliver mental health services to students.

Meanwhile, Spanberger’s Republican opponent, Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears, has presented her “Operation Defend & Deliver” campaign across the state. The Republican Governors Association said she is the “only candidate in this race who will keep Virginia on the right track.”

Virginia Beach Boat Lands Big Tuna

The Mama C, a fishing boat based in Virginia Beach, reeled in a massive catch last week—a tuna that could be valued at up to $1.8 million.

The boat’s crew was taking part in the 2025 White Marlin Open in the Atlantic Ocean.

Its 95-pound tuna weighed 40 pounds more than the next heaviest fish on the tournament’s leaderboard at the time it was brought aboard, putting it in line for the big prize.

The catch comes as little surprise to local anglers, who know that the waters off Virginia Beach offer some of the best summer tuna fishing anywhere.
