Two Dead in Richmond Shooting

Two people were killed, and seven others were wounded during a mass shooting in Richmond in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The two victims were identified as 23-year-old Genesis Tamar Jones and 42-year-old Dominic Antoine Jackson.

“This was people hanging out on the streets. Two groups of individuals started fighting,” Police Chief Rick Edwards said. “Multiple people entered that fight with firearms in hand.“

Authorities collected more than 50 shell casings, recovered at least two guns, and towed six vehicles for evidence in the aftermath of the violence.

Judge Pauses Redistricting Vote Preparations

Tazewell County Circuit Court Judge Jack Hurley issued an emergency injunction last week to halt all preparations for the scheduled April 21 referendum on whether to change the constitution to allow congressional redistricting this year.

The Republican National Committee and the National Republican Congressional Committee filed lawsuits, arguing that the timing of the vote and the language of the proposal are illegal. “This ruling is an important victory in our fight to make sure that politicians don’t get to select their own voters,” Republican Rep. Ben Cline said.

Attorney General Jay Jones said the state will appeal the temporary restraining order. “The Supreme Court of Virginia has already made clear that this matter will go to the voters, but Republicans unhappy with that ruling went back to their friendly judge,” House Speaker Don Scott said.

Early voting for the April 21 referendum is scheduled to begin on March 6, but would be delayed if this stay remains in effect.

Another Winter Storm Moves Through

A blizzard warning remains in effect until 7 p.m. today for Accomack County and the Eastern Shore as a major winter storm moves up the Atlantic coast.

The system was also forecast to drop up to a foot of snow in parts of Northern Virginia before moving east later today.

The entire D.C. area was under a winter weather advisory overnight, with measurable snow forecast as far south as Spotsylvania and as far west as Culpeper.

Western areas saw a mix of rain and snow from the storm, which could help alleviate ongoing drought watches and warnings.
