Article Icon 1Port of Virginia Dredging Completed

The Port of Virginia completed a channel-deepening project that delivered a 55-foot deep channel and harbor, the deepest on the East Coast. The dredging is part of the port’s $1.4 billion Gateway Investment Program.

Completion of this project positions The Port of Virginia as a national leader in U.S. port infrastructure development and will help drive the Virginia economy,” the interim executive director of the Virginia Port Authority said. Sarah McCoy added that the port can now welcome the largest ships on the Atlantic Ocean.

With the dredging complete, the port’s maritime charts will be updated to reflect the increased capacity.

Gov. Abigail Spanberger said she voted in favor of a constitutional amendment that would allow redistricting this year. The gerrymandered map would give Democrats an advantage in 10 of the Commonwealth’s 11 districts.

Early voting showed a heavier turnout in traditionally Republican areas. “It’s not a done deal by any means,” Rep. Don Beyer, a Democrat, said. Under the proposed map, Beyer’s current, compact Northern Virginia district would be expanded to stretch from Arlington to Yorktown.

Supporters of the proposal have raised far more money than opponents ahead of the April 21 vote. The Virginia Public Access Project reported that more than $21 million of that funding has come from Washington, D.C., with an additional $5 million from New York.

People need to look at why national Democrats are spending $20 million to try to gerrymander Virginia’s congressional districts,” Republican state Sen. Glen Sturtevant said. “It makes it very plain.

Lynchburg Police arrested a 26-year-old employee at a Dick’s Sporting Goods store and charged him with illegally filming in a dressing room at the store. Derek Lee Beard also faces five felony charges relating to the allegation.

Earlier this month, a female customer noticed an item that looked like a pen hidden in a changing area after Beard said he had cleaned the room. She removed the device and contacted authorities.

According to court documents, Beard was in possession of multiple recording devices and storage cards containing videos of nude women and underage girls inside the changing room.

Authorities are trying to identify more women who may have been taped without their knowledge.
