ICE Detains 15 in Chesterfield

Civil rights organizations led peaceful protests outside the Chesterfield County Courthouse after U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents detained 15 people there over four days. The most recent was Salvador Calderon, who appeared in court yesterday for a traffic violation and was then taken away by ICE agents.

“It is not clear how ICE determines when to be at the Chesterfield County court campus,” Sheriff Karl Leonard said. None of those detained by ICE had been incarcerated at the time of their removal.

“The fact that there have been some arrests at the Chesterfield County Courthouse makes sense because they clearly have been arrested, they clearly are here illegally, and therefore that’s part of our statewide effort,” Gov. Glenn Youngkin said.

In March, Virginia had more than 2,000 removal orders, placing it among the top five states.

Searing Heat Lingers

According to an experimental index compiled by the National Weather Service, most of Virginia sweltered under “major” or “extreme” heat risk this week.

Sites across the state touched records, with Richmond reaching 100°F, Dulles Airport hitting 99°F, and Wallops Island on the Eastern Shore coming in at 95°F.

Scattered pop-up storms today may drop temperatures a bit, but a heat advisory remains in effect in Central Virginia, and the humidity is forecast to remain stifling.

Animal control officials reminded Virginians that it is illegal to leave pets outdoors without proper shelter during a heat advisory.

Jobs Numbers Reported

The Commonwealth added 1,200 nonfarm jobs in May, bringing the total number of nonfarm jobs to 4.28 million. According to the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of jobs has increased by 49,400 over the last 12 months.

Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin said the increase, paired with an upward revision of April’s jobs number, “underscores the strength of Virginia’s job market.”

However, Democratic Rep. Don Beyer noted that while the jobs number increased, the overall unemployment rate edged up as well, to 3.4%.

Even with the increase, Virginia’s unemployment rate is 0.8 percentage points less than the national rate of 4.2%.
