When the Virginia Museum of History and Culture opened its exhibit, We The People: The World in Our Commonwealth, this week, we asked when and how you came to be in Virginia. Many readers trace their lineage back centuries.
“My family is of Scots-Irish heritage, and came into South Carolina as indentured servants in the 1700s,” one said. After earning their freedom, they moved to the mountains of southwest Virginia, which reminded them of their homeland.
Another reader wrote that two Irish brothers arrived in Virginia as indentured servants in the early 1800s. They moved up the James River and settled in Fluvanna County. “One of their 1830s log cabins remains as a primary room in our home on a Virginia Century Farm.”
