Article Icon 1 Virginia Colleges Face Viability Risks

A study by the state’s Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission found three Virginia universities have at least “some” viability risks that might threaten their ability to operate in the future.

The University of Mary Washington, Virginia State University, and Radford University are the schools at most peril, and the study reports each “is attempting to address its viability risks through various initiatives and efforts.”

Concerns at the schools include declining enrollment, an inability to increase tuition without losing students, and aging buildings.

No state-supported schools were found to have “high” viability risks, and no universities are at risk of closing immediately.

Rescue dogs and cats from North Carolina found shelter from Hurricane Helene in Virginia, and many will remain here for good in new homes.

At the height of the storm, the Richmond SPCA served as a hub for hundreds of displaced dogs and cats, animals that are now being cared for in shelters throughout the Commonwealth.

Other animals stayed within Virginia but moved from one place to another, including the dozens that had to be evacuated from the Radford Animal Shelter before the storm destroyed that building.

Many newly arrived animals will be available for adoption starting next week.

Article Icon 1Federal Infrastructure Spending in Virginia

Federal money to speed our recovery from Hurricane Helene is coming to Virginia through grants, low-interest loans, and funding to help with cleanup efforts.

However, that isn’t the only federal spending that flows to Virginia. As of March, the White House announced some $10 billion in infrastructure spending had been assigned to more than 348 specific projects in the Commonwealth.

The website Truck Parking Club found that 64% of that spending was for transportation projects such as roads and bridges. Another 16.2% went to broadband internet, and 8% was for clean energy, buildings, and manufacturing.
