The Virginia Flyover - McAfee Knob - Appalachian Trail

Question: How did the Virginia Creeper Trail get its name?

Answer: The trail’s name comes from the Virginia-Carolina Railroad’s steam trains, nicknamed “Virginia Creeper” after the native creeper plant growing along the tracks. The name also fit the slow-laboring steam engines climbing mountain grades with heavy loads. When the railway became a recreational trail, the nickname carried over permanently.
