Answer: Thomas Jefferson’s family moved from Shadwell to Tuckahoe in 1746 at the request of William Randolph’s will. Randolph, a close friend of Peter Jefferson and cousin to Jane Randolph Jefferson, asked Peter to relocate his family to Tuckahoe plantation to raise and privately educate Randolph’s three young orphaned children until his son Thomas Mann Randolph came of age.
