Article Icon 1Heat Blankets Virginia

A heat dome is bringing extreme temperatures to a large swath of the Commonwealth this week, with the heat index pushing past 100 degrees in many places.

Experts warn it is important to stay safe, to stay hydrated, and to remain indoors as much as possible during the day. If you don’t have access to air conditioning, many cooling stations are available, including public libraries in most counties.

The Virginia Department of Emergency Management noted it is important to track the early signs of heat-related illnesses, such as cramps, heat exhaustion, headache, and excessive sweating. Don’t wait to seek medical help if experiencing these symptoms.

The remains of fallen U.S. Navy Seaman Angelina Resendiz were returned home to Texas by military personnel and given military honors. Her funeral is scheduled for Friday in Brownsville.

Resendiz, 21, went missing from her barracks at Naval Station Norfolk on May 29. Her body was found by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service on June 9 in an off-base wooded area in Norfolk.

The Navy confirmed it is holding a fellow sailor named Jeremiah Copeland in connection with her death, but he has not yet been charged.

Virginia is home to 125 public and private colleges and universities, many in scenic settings. Reviewers at WorldAtlas have identified the most beautiful college towns in the state.

The list begins with Blacksburg, home to Virginia Tech, and Charlottesville, home to the University of Virginia. It also highlights smaller spots like Emory, Farmville, Harrisonburg, and Sweet Briar.

The last two cities on the list are Lexington—home to the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) and Washington & Lee—and Williamsburg, site of the College of William & Mary.
