Article Icon 1Hampton Roads Storm Aftermath

The Hampton Roads area cleaned up after an October nor’easter brought high winds and tidal flooding. A Coastal Flood Warning was in effect until yesterday, and many roads were impassable at the height of the storm.

Forecasters accurately predicted the storm’s arrival, but tidal flooding can be overwhelming, even when residents are aware it’s coming. “When it comes, it comes fast,” Virginia Beach resident Frank Willson said. “You don’t have a lot of time to prepare.”

In the wake of the storm, many schools were closed or held classes virtually yesterday.

At one point, about 20,000 Dominion Energy customers were without power, but crews had restored electricity to most customers by yesterday morning.

The federal government has until the end of the day today to show probable cause why it should continue to hold a 13-year-old boy from Massachusetts who is locked up in Virginia, 500 miles from his family. Judge Richard G. Stearns wrote that the teen is “presumably in the company of unrelated adult detainees.”

The boy was picked up by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in his hometown of Everett, Massachusetts, last week after a run-in with local police, and was detained by ICE before his parents could pick him up at a local jail.

He was transferred to a detention center in Winchester. A lawyer for the boy’s relatives stated that the family is from Brazil and has the necessary legal authorization to work in the U.S.

The family is reportedly in the midst of an asylum case. The teen’s name was not released because of his age.

Article Icon 1Virginia Offers Pick of Orchards

Orchards in the Commonwealth produce more than a dozen varieties of apples, many of which are ripening this month.

For amazing views, fresh doughnuts, and, of course, apples, consider visiting Carter Mountain Orchard, located outside Charlottesville.

Great Country Farms in Loudoun County will host its first LoCo Cider Fest on November 15. In Timberville, Showalter’s Orchard & Greenhouse adds alcohol, producing Virginia’s Old Hill Hard Cider.

In the Front Royal area, Stribling Orchard and Hartland Orchard are open throughout the month for self-picking.

An orchard doesn’t need to be extensive to deliver delicious fruit. Bush Neck Farm, located along the Chickahominy River in Williamsburg, is renowned for producing both apples and pumpkins.
