The Virginia Department of Transportation has delayed plans to open a new bridge as part of the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel Expansion. The bridge was scheduled to open for traffic on Sunday.

The new, eight-lane south trestle will connect South Island to Norfolk. VDOT has not set a new opening date.

At 1.2 miles long and 202 feet wide, the new bridge is thought to be the widest in the Commonwealth. The bridge is only one part of the total project, which is expected to cost $3.9 billion.

Last month, engineers finished boring out the second of two new tunnels that will carry traffic beneath the Chesapeake Bay.

Alexandria police said the three masked people who appeared to terrorize a home two weeks ago were family members of the victim and carrying out a prank. At least seven people, including three adults and three teenagers, were involved in executing the stunt.

The victim, who did not know it was a hoax, said she will not press charges. Alexandria Police Chief Tarrick McGuire said the incident “represents a moral failure, a moral failure where the consequences could have been deadly.

Doorbell cam footage on Oct. 14 showed three masked individuals repeatedly approaching the home and making threatening comments, including “if you do not come out, we will come in.”

Authorities stated that they spent more than 100 man-hours investigating the incident. The names of those involved were not disclosed.
