Good Morning! On this day in 1752, Virginia and all the American colonies adopted the Gregorian calendar to replace the outdated Julian version. September 2 was followed by September 14 to bring the new calendar into modern alignment.

The town of Dumfries recently took control of the historic Weems-Botts Museum. Constructed in 1749, the building became home to Parson Mason Locke Weems. Weems wrote a controversial biography of George Washington, including the spurious tale that a young Washington wouldn’t lie about chopping down a cherry tree.

School Districts Sue Over Funding

The school districts in Arlington and Fairfax counties sued the federal Department of Education after it placed them and three other Northern Virginia districts on “high-risk” status, which could result in losing access to future federal funding.

The federal lawsuits follow the Trump administration’s ruling that the school districts are in violation of Title IX of federal education law because they allow students to use bathrooms and locker rooms based on their declared gender identity instead of their sex at birth.

“Nothing in the text of Title IX prohibits schools from allowing transgender students from accessing school facilities that align with their gender identity,” the lawsuit reads. “To the contrary, several U.S. Courts of Appeals—including the Fourth Circuit—have held that Title IX requires schools to allow such access.”

The districts say the federal action could cost them as much as a combined $190 million, including funding to provide low-income students with free meals and special needs students with education support. They asked for immediate relief from the federal sanctions.

Bristol Hosts Both Its Governors

The city of Bristol is divided in two by State Street, with the state of Virginia on one side and the state of Tennessee on the other.

Last week, Virginia’s Gov. Glenn Youngkin met his fellow Republican, Tennessee’s Gov. Bill Lee, for a reception in Bristol. It was the first time in more than three decades that the respective state governors had met in the border town. Both governors discussed their collaboration efforts.

“There has been economic development collaboration; best practices shared between states,” Youngkin noted. Lee pointed to disaster response during Hurricane Helene, noting that Virginia State Police teamed up with the Tennessee National Guard to carry out rescue missions.

“Thank you both for what you do and making Bristol an exceptional place to live, work, and play,” the president of the Bristol Chamber of Commerce told the governors.
