Coastal Virginia Powers Up

Dominion Energy announced that the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project is delivering electricity to the power grid. The utility is at work installing more turbines and is expected to complete the project next year.

Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind is designed to deliver 2.6 gigawatts of electricity upon completion, enough to power around 660,000 homes in the Commonwealth.

“This achievement marks another important step forward, adding much-needed electricity to help meet the fastest-growing power demand in the country,” Dominion’s CEO Robert Blue said.

The project had been halted for several weeks after the Department of the Interior issued a stop-work order just before Christmas. Construction resumed in January after a federal court intervened.

Data Center Proposals Multiply

Virginia is known as the data center capital of the world, and more projects are under consideration across the Commonwealth.

In Appomattox County, plans are underway for a $3 billion hyperscale data center campus. “It gives us a tremendous boost in our tax base because data centers invest a lot of money, and it creates high-paying jobs,” the head of the county’s economic development authority said.

Residents in Hanover County attended a meeting last week to push back against the proposed Mountain Road Tech Park, which will be discussed by the planning commission at its next meeting on April 16. “We need to study the impacts on our water, our health, our electric bills, and our rural character,” one neighbor said.

Homeowners in an Ashburn neighborhood reportedly received offers of more than $4 million per acre to sell their properties. Data center developers may build as many as six facilities in the area, although no formal plans have been filed with Loudoun County.

Virginia Roadways

The Commonwealth boasts the best highways in the United States, according to a Reason Foundation study.

The report graded highways in 13 categories, including spending, pavement quality, safety, and traffic congestion. Virginia earned high marks for its use of cost-benefit analysis to determine what projects to fund.

Virginia jumped from fourth to first, driven in large part by improvements in the quality of its urban interstate and urban arterial pavements and by a decrease in its urban fatality rate.

“The state spends less than comparable states while delivering things like good pavement conditions and relatively low percentages of structurally deficient bridges,” the report’s author, Baruch Feigenbaum, said.
