Article Icon 1Virginia Military Bases Tighten Security

Military bases in the Commonwealth tightened their security procedures as the U.S. continued striking targets in Iran.

Naval Station Norfolk, the world’s largest naval station, suspended its Trusted Traveler Program, which allows authorized individuals to have unescorted access to the facility.

Instead, visitors without authorized base credentials must obtain a visitor pass and be accompanied by an approved sponsor at all times while on base. Unvetted guests are no longer allowed.

Visitors should also expect delays before they can clear security at Fort Lee in Prince George County. “This measure is being implemented out of an abundance of caution,” a spokesman said. “There is no specified threat to the installation at this time.

George Washington University in D.C. sold its satellite campus in Virginia to Amazon Data Services for $427 million last week.

The proceeds from the endowment will be used to make strategic investments in our research and teaching missions and to increase resources available for student financial aid,” GWU President Ellen Granberg said.

The university will be allowed up to five years to wind down its operations at the Loudoun County campus, where its School of Nursing and other programs are based.

The transaction reportedly empowers Amazon to build a data center or information technology facility on the site. Amazon has said it intends to spend $35 billion by 2040 to build data centers in the Commonwealth.

Article Icon 1Some Police Misuse Plate Readers

The Virginia State Crime Commission reported that some state law enforcement agencies are not complying with the law governing automatic license plate readers (ALPR). The commission surveyed 361 law enforcement agencies in Virginia, but only 251 responded.

Under a law enacted last year, authorities are limited in how they may use ALPR. They may employ it in cases of criminal violations, active missing-person investigations, human trafficking investigations, searches for a person with an active arrest warrant, or to track a stolen vehicle or license plate.

Some of the violations the commission reported include agencies holding on to data for longer than 21 days and providing continuous access to out‑of‑state agencies. The commission said that “measures will be taken this year to address these issues.”
