Zachary Jordan Alam was arrested on May 9 and charged with residential breaking and entering and with vandalism in Henrico County.

The 33-year-old from Centreville was pardoned earlier this year by President Trump after starting an eight-year prison sentence for his actions at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.

He was convicted of assaulting police officers and smashing the speakers’ lobby window that Ashli Babbitt tried to climb through before she was fatally shot by law enforcement.

Alam had reportedly been living in a group home in Richmond with others who were pardoned this year. His next court appearance is scheduled for June 24.

Article Icon 1VDOT Seeking Input

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) wants to know what drivers think about potential projects statewide.

In the Hampton Roads region, VDOT is conducting surveys in Virginia Beach, Hampton, Newport News, James City County, and York County.

The department is also seeking feedback about safety and operational issues and new ideas for Route 627, the Richmond-Henrico Turnpike/Meadowbridge Road.

In the city of Harrisonburg, VDOT is requesting input about how to make Virginia Avenue safer. In the last five years, 159 accidents have happened on a 2.5-mile segment of the road, an average of 32 crashes per year.

Article Icon 1Youngkin Appoints Farmers to Panel

Gov. Glenn Youngkin appointed two farmers to represent the Commonwealth on the Chesapeake Bay Program Agricultural Advisory Committee.

The panel was formed after a meeting last year of the Chesapeake Executive Council, which brings together leaders from across the bay’s watershed to discuss ways to restore and protect the Chesapeake. The group is particularly concerned about farm runoff.

“I have consistently said that we must work with Virginia’s farmers, not against them, in order to achieve our goals,” Youngkin said.

The farmers named to the panel are Kevin Craun, co-owner of a 900-acre operation in Rockingham County, and Bob Waring, co-manager of a third-generation row crop farm in Essex County.
