Governor Signs and Vetoes Bills

Gov. Glenn Youngkin signed 599 bills, amended 159, and vetoed 157 of the measures sent to him by the legislature this year. The governor had until midnight Monday to take action on bills sent to him last month.

New laws include changes on issues such as school safety, student health, cybercrime, and transportation. They also aim to improve mental health in Virginia and provide more legal protections for military families.

Some of the measures Youngkin vetoed include a bill to increase the minimum wage, one to create a Prescription Drug Affordability Board, and an attempt to ban assault weapons in certain public spaces.

“The legislation that I’ve signed into law and the budget amendments I’ve put forward this year will go a long way to helping ensure Virginia remains a great place to live, work, and raise a family,” Youngkin announced. The legislature returns next week.

Dogs Rescued from Hoarding Situation

The Old Dominion Humane Society in Fredericksburg rescued 22 dogs that had been living in deplorable conditions in Kentucky. The animals were kept outdoors all winter without adequate shelter, food, or water.

At one point, 70 dogs had lived on the property, but many were killed in flooding earlier this year. The rescued canines ranged in age from 2 weeks to 8 years old.

All 22 dogs were brought to Virginia last week and examined by veterinarians, who gave them vaccinations and microchips.

Some of the pups will be cared for by another Fredericksburg-based group, Squishy Face Crew. Most of the dogs are already in foster care and are expected to be adopted when they are ready.

Virginia Is the Place to Live

Virginia features 11 of the top 100 places to live in the United States, according to a new survey by the data platform Niche.

The top spot on the list is the Colonial Village neighborhood of Arlington, which earned A-plus grades across the board, including for its public schools, nightlife, health and fitness, and commute.

Other Virginia communities that made the list include Ballston, Radnor, and Innsbrook, all in the top 25.

Niche analyzed thousands of communities to compile this year’s ranking.
