Hokies Protest Revocation of DEI
Hundreds of students, staffers, and graduates marched for hours on the Virginia Tech campus and rallied in favor of diversity, equity, and inclusion policies as the Board of Visitors was meeting to vote on whether to end the school’s DEI programs.
“It’s time Virginia Tech checks their definition of Ut Prosim and supports the community,” junior Nick Cavicchio said, citing the university’s Latin motto that translates to “That I may serve.”
Despite the protests, the board voted 12-2 to eliminate the university’s Inclusivity Excellence and Strategy Office as a way to comply with an executive order from President Trump.
According to the decision, Virginia Tech President Tim Sands must report to the board within 30 days about compliance with its resolution. Other state schools, including UVA, VCU, and the community college system, have already taken similar actions to end DEI policies.
