Article Icon 1New Laws Coming in July

A number of new Virginia laws will go into effect on July 1.

On the road, you’ll need to buckle up no matter where you are sitting as a backseat safety belt law takes effect, and drivers who don’t yield properly to pedestrians at crosswalks will face stiffer fines.

Another new law will force schools to implement new protections against cyberbullying. In court, prosecutors will be able to charge drug dealers with involuntary manslaughter for selling fentanyl that causes a fatal overdose.

New laws will also give claimants of recent crimes up to three years to file with the Virginia Victims Fund, up from the current one-year deadline.

No one was injured, but a house fire in Virginia Beach left residents and dozens of dogs homeless.

Firefighters say the blaze started in a bedroom in the rear of the home. By the time they arrived, heavy smoke was billowing out.

Three adults and one child reportedly lived in the house along with an estimated 50 dogs.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Article Icon 1Surge in Contractor Licensing

Virginia may process more than 14,000 new contractor and tradesman license applications this year, a 10% increase from last year and a nearly 50% increase from 2015.

The boost comes as federal job cuts and the advent of artificial intelligence continue to raise questions about the stability of white-collar employment.

Some workers may be moving away from salaried positions toward skilled trades, often requiring specific licenses. “Contractors and tradesmen know that opportunity thrives in Virginia,” Gov. Glenn Youngkin said.

More than 1,100 of the applicants moved to Virginia from other states.
