Article Icon 1UVA Names Acting President

The University of Virginia announced that the school’s chief operating officer, Jennifer “J.J.” Wagner Davis, will serve as acting president once current president Jim Ryan leaves the post.

Ryan, who is resigning under pressure from critics, is expected to step aside by Aug. 15.

UVA’s outgoing and incoming rectors sent a joint letter to the community praising Ryan for his accomplishments and explaining how the next president will be selected.

“The search process will include input from a full range of stakeholders, including faculty, students, staff, and alumni,” they wrote. “This process will commence shortly, and we will continue to keep the community informed.”

The New Kent County Sheriff’s Office began using vehicle-based LiDAR speed enforcement cameras this week in work zones on I-64.

A 30-day warning period runs until Aug. 1 to give drivers time to adjust. After August 1, speeders face a $100 fine but no points off their license.

The cameras will flag vehicles going more than 11 mph over the posted speed limit.

County officials approved the system in response to an increasing number of accidents in construction zones.

Article Icon 1New State Laws Take Effect

If you are not wearing a seatbelt in the back seat of a car, you’re already in violation of one of the new state laws that went into effect on Tuesday.

Other new laws aim to provide better maternity care by allowing Medicaid to cover up to 10 doula visits during pregnancy and expanding postpartum patient rights.

Additional laws restrict student cell phone use in school and ensure that children who are successful content creators are compensated.

The expansion of the state’s seatbelt laws follows a state study that found one-third of 2024’s crash deaths involved passengers who were not buckled up.
