Article Icon 1Toll Increase Rejected

After a ruling by the Supreme Court of Virginia, drivers on the Dulles Greenway, the 14-mile private toll road between Leesburg and Dulles Airport, will not face a steep price hike.

The private company Toll Roads Investors Partnership (TRIP) II operates the road and sought a fare increase from $5.80 to $8.10 during peak hours for most vehicles. When the State Corporation Commission denied the request, the company sued.

The court set aside the suit and held that the rate increase would not be reasonable and would not benefit drivers.

TRIP II will be allowed to reapply for toll increases each year, the court added.

Protesters gathered in Norfolk when the Carnival Sunshine cruise ship docked over the weekend to object to the detention by Customs and Border Protection officers of more than a dozen visa-holding ship workers.

Federal agents who boarded the vessel and detained crew members in April alleged that Filipino crew members possessed child pornography.

An immigration activist denied the accusation. “There were no formal charges at all. Only accusations with no evidence,” Aquilina Soriano Versoza said. She is the executive director of the Pilipino Workers Center of Southern California.

She called on the cruise line to support its workers. “Carnival always cooperates with law enforcement investigations,” the company said.

Article Icon 1Manassas Park Murder Trial Delayed

A judge delayed the murder trial of Naresh Bhatt, which had been scheduled to begin in September, until October of 2026 at the earliest.

Bhatt was charged with first-degree murder, concealing a dead body, and defiling a dead body after his wife, Mamta Kafle Bhatt, disappeared last July. He will remain in custody until trial.

The long delay didn’t sit well with Mamta Kafle Bhatt’s family. “We feel quite defeated that the Commonwealth agreed so readily to this amount of a delay,” spokesperson Holly Wirth said.

The couple were married for about three years and have a young daughter.
