Article Icon 1Tunnel Project Bores Through

The Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel Expansion Project marked a milestone yesterday when its boring machine—nicknamed Mary—broke through the headwall at South Island. This was the final section of the tunnel to be dug out.

Gov. Glenn Youngkin and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy were on hand for a ceremony before Mary emerged. VDOT provided a live video feed of the breakthrough.

This segment of the boring project started last October, after Mary dug a parallel tunnel from Norfolk to Hampton.

The Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel Expansion will cost $3.9 billion and require replacing five bridges and adding these two tunnels. It’s the largest construction project in state history and is scheduled to be finished by 2027.

Early election voting started a week ago, and traditionally Republican districts were off to a fast start. Among the 20 districts with the most votes so far, 11 lean Republican, five lean Democratic, and four are rated as competitive.

Roanoke television station WSLS offered in-depth interviews with Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears and Democratic former Rep. Abigail Spanberger, the gubernatorial candidates. Both discussed economic issues and vowed to protect children.

I’m hearing about electric bills that are $800, $1,600. Somebody has to do something, and that somebody is me,” Earle-Sears said. She vowed to keep the Commonwealth out of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative and to engage in tough talks with power companies.

Spanberger vowed to work “in concert with the General Assembly to pull on every lever to contend with the housing affordability crisis, to work to lower costs in health care, and to contend with a real challenge facing so many Virginians when we get our energy bills.” Early voting ends Nov. 1.

Article Icon 1Vaccination Schedule Remains Unchanged

A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) committee voted last week to recommend against giving children younger than four the combined measles, mumps, rubella, and chicken pox vaccine.

The Virginia Department of Health (VDH)—which currently recommends inoculations against all four diseases after 12 months—said it will not change its guidance until the CDC makes its recommendation fully official.

VDH said fewer children are getting vaccinated overall, with the religious exemption rate for kindergartners edging up from 2.1% in 2023 to 2.4% last year and medical exemptions holding steady at 0.3%.

The CDC’s target for avoiding measles outbreaks is for 95% of children to be vaccinated. In the city of Alexandria, the Virginia Department of Health said that 83% of kindergartners were fully vaccinated against measles, mumps, and rubella last year.

What if there were a natural, simple way to eliminate stubborn nail fungus—one that’s stronger and more effective than anything you could buy over the counter?

It might sound unbelievable, but thousands of people are now discovering a breakthrough method that targets fungus at its source. And the best part? It doesn’t require expensive creams, endless doctor visits, or harsh medications.

Instead, it involves a quick, at-home routine so simple you’ll wonder why no one told you sooner. All you need to do is soak a pair of socks in a special purple liquid, slip them on your feet for just one minute, and let the formula go to work.

Soon, discolored, brittle nails and dry, cracked skin can be replaced by clear, healthy nails and smooth skin.

Skeptical? That’s understandable. But once you see how fast it works, you’ll believe it.
