Article Icon 1Attorney General Candidates Debate

Republican Attorney General Jason Miyares and his Democratic challenger Jay Jones met in a strident yet civil debate at the University of Richmond.

Jones entered the exchange facing questions about his threatening text messages, his driving habits, and the community service he was sentenced to complete.

I am ashamed, I am embarrassed, and I am sorry,” Jones said when asked about sending violent text messages to a former colleague. “I think Virginians deserve leaders who understand when they make mistakes and are held accountable.

Jones frequently sought to make the race about Donald Trump, saying that Miyares has failed to protect Virginians from federal overreach. Miyares repeatedly questioned whether Virginians could trust Jones.

The incumbent pointed to successful programs that he said have reduced crime and called Jones “a politician, not a prosecutor” who would not be able to pass a background check.

The men quickly shook hands at the end of the debate.

Article Icon 1Roanoke May Bet on a Casino

Roanoke city government leaders said they will explore the possibility of creating an entertainment district anchored around a casino.

The proposal would involve repurposing the Berglund Special Events Center, which is 54 years old.

The goal for this project is to inspire economic growth through increased entertainment, dining, and lodging options, with a refurbished civic center drawing acts and people from all over,” Mayor Joe Cobb said.

According to the draft proposal, Roanoke would receive 6% of the first $100 million in gambling revenue generated by the project. These funds would be earmarked for neighborhoods, schools, infrastructure, and public safety.

The project would need legislative approval to move forward, which may be difficult to obtain.

Article Icon 1‘No Kings’ Protests Tomorrow

A second round of No Kings protests is scheduled for tomorrow at thousands of locations across the country and dozens of sites around Virginia. Gov. Glenn Youngkin huddled with two members of his cabinet yesterday for a public safety preparedness briefing ahead of the events.

In the Richmond area, protesters will gather on the Capitol grounds at 1 p.m. to hear a series of speeches and then march to the campus of Virginia Commonwealth University.

The Hands Across Alexandria rally begins at 9:30 a.m. and aims to line sidewalks from Powhatan Park to Potomac Yards along Route 1. There are also several rallies throughout the day in the Hampton Roads region and at various locations around Northern Virginia.

A similar day of protests across Virginia on June 14 was peaceful except for a single incident in Culpeper, where a 21 year old allegedly drove his SUV into a crowd of protesters, hitting one person.
