‘No Kings’ Rallies Redux

The year’s second round of “No Kings” protests brought out thousands of Virginians to rally, wave signs, and oppose the policies of the Trump administration. At Capitol Square in Richmond, thousands gathered to hear speakers before they marched to the VCU campus.

Many protesters highlighted their peaceful intent by wearing costumes. “We’re living in a banana republic,” Cristan Connito said at the rally in Chesapeake while dressed as a banana. Animal costumes were widespread at the protests in Virginia Beach and Richmond as well.

Hundreds more attended protests in Rocky Mount, Roanoke, and Floyd, where they chanted, “No kings, no crowns, we the people stand our ground.” Crowds also turned out in Charlottesville and locations in Northern Virginia.

Gov. Glenn Youngkin had activated the National Guard ahead of the protests, but no soldiers were spotted at the Richmond rally, which was monitored by a dozen or so state troopers and some Capitol Police officers.

No violence was reported in the Commonwealth in connection with the protests.

UVA Won’t Sign Federal Compact

The University of Virginia announced it will not sign the Compact for Academic Excellence that the Trump administration proposed to nine leading American universities.

Interim President Paul Mahoney wrote that, “We look forward to working together to develop alternative, lasting approaches to improving higher education,” but did not sign the agreement.

UVA is one of six schools to say no to the agreement, while three remain undecided.

The administration said the agreement would offer universities “multiple positive benefits,” including early access to research funding, in exchange for agreeing to a set of specific conditions. Hundreds of members of the UVA campus community rallied to oppose the agreement.

Masked Intruders Threaten Home

Authorities in Alexandria launched a criminal investigation after three costumed intruders threatened to break into a home last week.

The resident initially assumed the attack was a Halloween-themed prank, but became alarmed when the intruders became belligerent and made multiple attempts to enter the home. “It’s either you coming out or we coming in,” they threatened in footage caught on a doorbell camera.

The trio went to the rear of the home at one point, breaking through a fence and eventually slashing window screens. “My heart dropped when they said they were gonna take a chair and break down the door,” the homeowner’s daughter said.

The terrorized family went into hiding in the days after the incident while police searched for the perpetrators. The city’s police chief noted that, while they didn’t enter the house, the intruders could be charged with burglary under state law.

Goochland County: The Board of Supervisors will meet on Nov. 6 to consider allowing data centers and a small nuclear reactor in the county. The planning commission moved the proposal forward by a 3-2 vote after hearing opposition from hundreds of residents. (More)
