Article Icon 1UVA Killer Sentenced

Christopher Darnell Jones Jr. was sentenced to five life terms plus 23 years—the maximum penalty allowable—for murdering three people and wounding two others at the University of Virginia in 2022. The sentences are to be served consecutively.

Jones admitted that he opened fire aboard a bus that had just returned to campus after a field trip, killing three UVA football players and wounding two other students.

Before the sentence was imposed, Jones spoke to the families of the victims. “I didn’t know your sons. I didn’t know your boys. And I wish I did,” he said. Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Richard Farley called the murders the worst crime in Albemarle history.

The UVA community remains united in mourning the loss and celebrating the lives of Devin Chandler, Lavel Davis Jr., and D’Sean Perry, and in standing with those who were most closely affected by this tragedy,” interim President Paul Mahoney said.

Authorities charged three men with breaking into a residence and stealing two classic cars: a 1969 Chevrolet Camaro and a 1967 Chevrolet Chevelle.

The Henry County Sheriff’s Office accused Brent Doss, William Doss, and Bobby Leagans of entering a home earlier this month and taking the vehicles and other household items.

Investigators recovered both of the stolen cars and reported that one of the suspects had the key to the Camaro in his pocket when they detained him.

All three are charged with grand larceny and other crimes.

Article Icon 1Questions Abound in Comey Case

Defense attorneys asked a judge in Alexandria to dismiss the case against former FBI Director James Comey because of what they called “fundamental errors” in the grand jury process. Another judge has pointed to a “disturbing pattern of profound investigative missteps” by the government in the case.

Last week, President Trump’s hand-selected prosecutor, Lindsey Halligan, admitted that the full grand jury did not approve the final two-count indictment against Comey, which could be grounds for a dismissal.

However, in a document filed the next day, the Justice Department told the judge that “any assertion that the grand jury ‘never voted on the two-count indictment’ is contradicted by the official transcript.”

Comey is accused of lying to Congress in 2020. His trial is scheduled to begin in January.
