Centreville House Explodes

Fairfax County fire crews responded after a gas leak apparently caused a home explosion in Centreville.

At least 50 nearby homes were evacuated as authorities searched for the source of the leak on Sunday night. Gas service to the entire neighborhood was shut off.

The house erupted in flames so quickly that it was all but destroyed before firefighters arrived. The flames had been extinguished by Monday.

Only one person was inside the house at the time of the explosion and escaped with non-life-threatening injuries. A neighbor was also hurt.

Driver Wreaks Havoc on I-95

Virginia State Police said a driver with Florida plates caused 13 accidents as he attempted to evade apprehension on I-95 over the weekend.

Officers first spotted 34-year-old Garrett Ryan Sulli near Petersburg. He fled north on the interstate in a Chevrolet pickup truck, crashing into other vehicles as he went along.

“It felt like a movie to me,” said a passenger in one of the cars that was hit. “All I could really do was just scream.”

No injuries were reported as a result of the crashes. Sulli was detained in Spotsylvania County.

Students Protest ICE

High school students across the Commonwealth staged walkouts last week to protest tactics being used by federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers. Some students may face disciplinary action, while others were supported by administrators.

Hundreds of students from Rocktown and Harrisonburg High Schools left their buildings in protest. “I commend the courage shown by middle and high school students who chose to walk out in opposition to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement,” Harrisonburg Superintendent Michael Richards said.

A student from Albemarle High School—where hundreds walked out—explained that the protest was in support of other students. “My friends got deported, and I can’t see them ever again,” she said.

Some students at Deep Creek High School in Chesapeake said they wanted to participate but couldn’t leave the building, while students at Manor High School in Portsmouth were allowed to protest and then return to class.
