Article Icon 1Ebola Screening Underway at Dulles

Travelers returning to Virginia from three African countries are now facing enhanced screening at Dulles International Airport, as officials respond to an outbreak of the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Anyone in the DRC, Uganda, or South Sudan within the past 21 days must travel through Dulles, Atlanta, Houston, or JFK for CDC questioning and temperature checks. Foreign nationals are barred from entry.

The Virginia Department of Health says public risk remains low and no U.S. cases are confirmed. One American caring for patients in the DRC tested positive May 17 and was flown to Germany for treatment.

Article Icon 1Spanberger Fires Virginia Tech Rector

Gov. Abigail Spanberger removed John G. Rocovich as rector of Virginia Tech’s Board of Visitors Wednesday, citing ethics violations.

A letter accused Rocovich of violating the board’s code of ethics and statutes requiring members to act in Virginia Tech’s best interest, without specifying the conduct.

Rocovich was leading the presidential search for outgoing President Tim Sands after the board amended bylaws last year to allow a third term. Spanberger named Dominion Energy executive Ed Baine as Rocovich’s replacement.

House Minority Leader Terry Kilgore, R-Scott County, demanded an explanation, while Senate Majority Leader Scott Surovell, D-Fairfax County, praised the removal.

A new Google search analysis revealed Virginia’s pick for most misspelled word of 2026: “spaghetti,” based on five months of “how do you spell” queries pulled from Jan. 1 to May 18.

Nationally, “bougie” topped the list with 134,400 searches, followed by “favorite,” “through,” “business,” and “tomorrow.” Bringing up the rear of the top 10: “niece” and “separate.”

The study, released ahead of the National Spelling Bee, found other oddball state picks, including “chihuahua” in Georgia and “ukulele” in Minnesota.
