Virginia consumer sentiment tumbled in August, according to a new Roanoke College poll, as renewed inflation and a cooling labor market strained household budgets.

The Virginia Index of Consumer Sentiment fell to 59.6, down 7.8 points from February and 4.9 from a year earlier. Current conditions hit 53.7, the lowest since the 2022 inflation spike.

Around 42% of Virginians said their finances were worse than a year ago, and 51% called it a bad time to buy major household items. Wage growth slowed to 3.2% while inflation rose to 3.3%, largely from higher energy prices tied to the Middle East conflict.

Expectations held up better at 63.5, and Virginia still outperformed the nation.

A Virginia Tech-led study found that feeding and watching birds positively affects human well-being for most participants. Researchers surveyed Project FeederWatch members before and after a winter season, discovering 95% reported benefits compared to 55% for other life events.

Participants in the Project FeederWatch program linked the activity to positive emotions like joy and calm, deeper engagement through curiosity and skill-building, and a sense of meaning from helping birds or connecting with nature and family.

The work involved collaborators from Cornell Lab of Ornithology and other institutions.

Scientists note that feeders can pose risks to birds, such as disease or collisions, and urge responsible practices like regular cleaning. Project FeederWatch provides guidelines to support both people and wildlife.
