Article Icon 1Virginians Head to the Polls Tuesday

Virginia voters choose a U.S. senator, all 11 U.S. House members, and three state constitutional amendments when polls open Tuesday for the 2026 general election.

Polls are open 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., and anyone in line at 7 p.m. may vote. Early voting ended Oct. 31.

Sen. Mark Warner, a Democrat seeking a fourth term, faces Republican Bert Mizusawa, and candidates are competing for all 11 congressional seats.

The amendments would establish a right to reproductive freedom, including decisions involving abortion, repeal the state’s unenforceable ban on same-sex marriage, and automatically restore voting rights to felons upon their release from incarceration.

Many localities also have city council, school board, and referendum questions, including 47 cities and counties weighing a 1% sales tax for school construction.

Article Icon 1Spanberger Presses Colleges on Assault Policies

Gov. Abigail Spanberger has called on every Virginia college and university to review and update its sexual violence policies, after rape allegations at Radford University and a high-profile case at Cornell University drew national attention.

In a letter dated Oct. 29, Spanberger did not name either school but pointed to recent reporting on women assaulted on campuses in Virginia and across the country. She asked presidents to certify their policy reviews, submit their policies to the Secretary of Education’s office, and assess their prevention training.

Virginia law already requires colleges to certify each year, by Oct. 31, that they have reviewed and updated their sexual violence policies.

Spanberger said she has not moved to have Virginia State Police take over campus assault cases, as New York Gov. Kathy Hochul did at Cornell, but has not ruled it out.

Article Icon 1Virginia and D.C. Sue to Halt Arch

The Commonwealth of Virginia and the District of Columbia sued the Trump administration over the weekend to block construction of a 250-foot triumphal arch near Arlington National Cemetery.

Virginia Attorney General Jay Jones and D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwalb, both Democrats, called the project “flagrantly unlawful” and asked a federal judge to halt work that could begin as soon as this week.

The suit argues the arch needs congressional approval under the Commemorative Works Act and would snarl a major traffic artery between Virginia and the District. It also cites the Height of Buildings Act, since the arch would exceed 130 feet.

Jones called the arch an “illegal vanity project” and said it disrespects Arlington National Cemetery, while Schwalb said it would cause serious and irreparable harm to the District.

President Trump has defended the arch, which is tied to the nation’s 250th anniversary, and his lawyers called it a “generational national defense opportunity.”
