Article Icon 1Public Weighs In on $67B Dominion Merger

Virginians weighed in this week on the proposed $67 billion merger of Dominion Energy and Florida-based NextEra Energy. The combined company would serve more than 10 million customers, with NextEra shareholders owning 74.5%.

Telephonic public testimony began yesterday, the same day as the last of three in-person hearings at the State Corporation Commission in Richmond. More phone sessions are set for Nov. 9 and 10, the evidentiary phase begins Nov. 17, and a decision is due by Jan. 11.

Commission staff found the companies’ commitments “not sufficient” to ensure adequate service and recommended denying the deal as proposed.

The companies accepted 101 of 117 conditions proposed by commission staff and the attorney general’s office. They rejected a rate freeze and are offering $10 monthly credits for four years, five years of job protections, and a new downtown Richmond office building.

Article Icon 1Arlington Seeks Voice on Driverless Cars

Arlington County Board Chair Matt de Ferranti said the county wants a voice as Virginia lawmakers weigh whether to allow self-driving cars on state roads, adding that public safety must remain “at the forefront.”

A legislative work group has delivered its final report on autonomous vehicles, which is expected to shape legislation when the General Assembly convenes Jan. 13. De Ferranti said the county is awaiting its public release. According to the Virginia Association of Counties, the state has no specific law governing driverless-car testing or deployment.

Waymo, the Alphabet-owned robotaxi company, has been mapping Northern Virginia roads, including in Arlington and Alexandria, with human drivers behind the wheel, in preparation for possible state approval.

Because Virginia is a “Dillon Rule” state, localities have little authority to set their own rules. De Ferranti said Arlington will work with its state legislators to shape the outcome.

Article Icon 1Unknown Union Soldier Buried at Arlington

A young Union soldier whose remains were unearthed at Manassas National Battlefield Park was laid to rest Wednesday at Arlington National Cemetery, more than 160 years after he died.

Archaeologists found his nearly complete skeleton in March 2024 while excavating a Civil War field hospital site. His name remains unknown, but researchers believe he was 16 to 19 years old and likely died in the Second Battle of Manassas in August 1862.

Researchers found a rubber pocket comb with him. Park superintendent Kristofer Butcher said, “Every soldier who fought on this battlefield has a story,” even those whose names are lost.

The National Park Service transferred the remains to the Office of Army Cemeteries for burial, placing him alongside two fellow soldiers recovered from the same battlefield and interred at Arlington in 2018.
