Article Icon 1ICE Arrests 10 at Immigration Court

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers arrested 10 people at an immigration court in Sterling on Wednesday. Nearly all of the ICE agents wore masks.

ICE said its routine for agents to monitor immigration courts and detain not only violent criminals but also those in the U.S. illegally who have not committed other crimes.

Immigration advocacy groups said that when people appear before a judge, the government sometimes dismisses the case, and then the suspects are detained by ICE outside the courtroom

Video taken by the group New Virginia Majority showed an ICE agent grabbing and pushing one bystander and then knocking a camera phone out of the hands of another.

ICE is prepared to deploy tactical units this weekend in Northern Virginia, New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, and Seattle, ahead of planned protests.

The ICE Special Response Teams (SRTs) use military-style tracked vehicles and carry long guns. They have been involved in operations that federal agencies label high-risk, such as ongoing raids in Los Angeles.

“No Kings” protests opposing the Trump administration are planned for tomorrow nationwide and across the Commonwealth. They will coincide with a parade in D.C. celebrating the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Army and Flag Day. It’s also President Trump’s 79th birthday.

Congressman Don Beyer (D-8) and state elected officials are scheduled to speak at a protest rally in Alexandria, and other protests are planned in Arlington, Falls Church, Manassas, and other areas.

Article Icon 1Pumping the Brakes on the Car Tax

Republican gubernatorial candidate Winsome Earle-Sears and her Democratic challenger Abigail Spanberger both say they want to repeal Virginia’s car tax.

Earle-Sears announced her Axe the Tax initiative last week, which calls for eliminating both the car tax and taxes on tips. Spanberger has also vowed to find a bipartisan way to end the car tax.

The levy is not popular with drivers, but it generates significant revenue. Virginia estimates that eliminating the state’s car tax would cost localities around $2.5 to $3 billion each year.
