Article Icon 1Consumer Confidence Is Down

Consumer sentiment in Virginia dropped over the last three months, according to the latest survey from the Institute for Policy and Opinion Research at Roanoke College.

Consumer sentiment was 63.6, down 13 points from the first quarter of the year and the second-lowest reading since the survey began in 2011.

While the labor market remains strong and wage growth is outpacing inflation, uncertainty is weighing heavily on consumers, particularly around tariffs,” economics professor Alice Louise Kassens said.

In contrast, a separate national measure of consumer optimism jumped this month after the U.S. slashed punishing tariffs on China. The Conference Board’s Consumer Confidence Index had been in decline since the start of the year.

The University of Virginia men’s golf team finished second in the nation, falling 4-1 in the final round of the NCAA championship to 12-time winner Oklahoma State.

It was the first time the Cavaliers reached the championship match.

Senior Paul Chang was key to the NCAA run, helping lift UVA from 25th place following the first day of the Reno Regionals to seventh on the final day. In the final rounds, the team eliminated Auburn and Florida, the last two national champions.

We are ACC Champions and National Runner-Up, so that’s a heck of a year but a little bit short of our goal,” head coach Bowen Sargent said. “Most of our guys will be back, and I’m looking forward to next year.”

Hello!

My name is Cole, and I’m the CEO here at The Virginia Flyover.

I’ve had plenty of jobs in my life. Before I found my way into several digital media roles, I had some dirty jobs—the kind that would make Mike Rowe proud. Flowback driver in the oilfield, drywall hauler, medical janitor, home flood restoration tech.

Without a doubt, my favorite job has been running The Virginia Flyover.

And not just because it doesn’t rain indoors.

I grew up in Flyover Country, and I’ve felt keenly the way that traditional news media brands have left most of America behind. I believe in the mission of The Virginia Flyover: to deliver a free, top-notch news publication without the bias that’s driven most of us away from mainstream media.

Every day, I get to come to work to help build something I believe in.

95,000 Virginians believe in The Virginia Flyover, too, and it’s an honor to serve you every day.

If you appreciate what we deliver, would you support us directly?

We’re an independent small business, and our advertisers don’t completely cover the revenue that we depend on.

I would appreciate a donation. They allow us to keep building the product we believe in!
