VA Beach Relocating 150-Year-Old Cemetery

The Ewell-Gimbert Cemetery, a small family burial ground dating to the 1800s, will be relocated to accommodate a major flood mitigation project near Sabre Street and South Lynnhaven Parkway. The move aims to protect the neighborhood from chronic flooding and rising sea levels.

Norfolk State University history professor Stephanie Richmond noted the site’s significance to Virginia Beach’s early families while acknowledging the difficult balance between preservation and climate adaptation in Hampton Roads.

The city promises respectful relocation following state guidelines with archaeological oversight.

Experts warn similar challenges may increase as coastal Virginia confronts more frequent flooding. The project reflects broader efforts to safeguard communities while honoring historic sites.

VA to Fund Cancer Screening for Firefighters

Virginia will invest $2 million annually in a new grant program to help localities provide cancer screenings for career firefighters. The funding, approved in the state budget via a gubernatorial amendment, addresses the elevated cancer risks faced by first responders due to exposure to carcinogens and toxic smoke.

Studies show firefighters have a significantly higher cancer rate. Advocates emphasize early detection, noting that catching the disease at Stage 1 dramatically improves outcomes compared to later stages.

Localities can apply for grants covering up to $350 per screening.

Fire service leaders, including those who have battled the disease personally, hailed the measure as lifesaving. The program expands access to preventive care, potentially reducing long-term healthcare costs and honoring the risks taken by those who protect Virginia communities.
