Good Morning! On this day in 1875, the town of Falls Church was incorporated in Fairfax County. It became a city in 1948.
When the Virginia Museum of History and Culture opened its exhibit, We The People: The World in Our Commonwealth, last week, we asked when and how your relatives came to Virginia. Many new immigrants passed through what is today known as Hopewell.
“My great, great, great, great, great grandfather was kidnapped from the Azores,” one reader told us. “In 1765, he was found abandoned at Hopewell’s City Point. In 1776, at age 16, he enlisted in the 10th Virginia regiment as a private.”
Another wrote, “My great papou (grandfather in Greek) came to the U.S. in 1915. He worked in the northeast for a year or two before taking a train to Hopewell, where he worked as a translator for DuPont. He was well-travelled and spoke seven languages fluently.”
