10 Homicide Cases Face Questions over Examiner

Former Virginia medical examiner Dr. Fernanda da Silva Lameira was fired in February after officials discovered she had submitted an inauthentic letter claiming she passed a forensic pathology board exam.

Lameira had performed autopsies and testified as an expert witness in at least 10 Hampton Roads homicide cases. Prosecutors were later notified of credibility-related information in her personnel file.

At least one defense attorney plans to challenge a conviction tied to her testimony, and other attorneys could seek records to determine whether her credentials affected past cases.

Officials have not said Lameira’s autopsies or findings were invalid. Lameira began working Aug. 3 as an assistant professor of pathology at Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine.

Lightning Kills Man, Damages Virginia Beach Homes

A 41-year-old Colorado man died after being struck by lightning Thursday afternoon on Cape Charles Beach. A woman struck alongside him suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Lightning also sparked a house fire in Virginia Beach’s Windsor Woods neighborhood, where flames and heavy smoke filled the roof and attic. Two adults and two dogs were displaced, but no injuries were reported.

Another lightning strike damaged a second Virginia Beach home early Friday morning, though the damage was minor and no one was displaced.

The Cape Charles death was Virginia’s first lightning fatality since 2023.

Amazon Drone Delivery Coming to Central Virginia

Amazon plans to bring its Prime Air drone delivery service to parts of Henrico County, Hanover County, and the greater Richmond area.

Eligible customers could receive packages weighing 5 pounds or less in as little as 30 minutes. Amazon says more than 60% of its most frequently purchased items qualify for drone delivery.

The company will host a community open house Aug. 27 at Richmond Raceway, where residents can see a Prime Air drone, meet members of the Prime Air team, and ask questions about the service.

Customers will be able to choose drone delivery at checkout when it is available and select a drop-off point for their order. Amazon is expanding Prime Air to nearly 500 U.S. cities and towns by the end of 2026, but a Central Virginia launch date has not been announced.
