Article Icon 1Giant Glowing Sun Lands in Norfolk

A giant inflatable sun makes its North American debut tonight at Old Dominion University’s Helios Public Arts Festival, after rain and lightning in the forecast pushed Friday’s events to today, WAVY reports.

The sculpture by British artist Luke Jerram shows the sun at a scale of 1:200 million and is lit from within, so its surface appears to churn with solar storms. The free festival runs 5 to 9 p.m. outside the Barry Art Museum on 43rd Street, with an expanded schedule that includes the performances planned for Friday, so check the museum’s website for updates.

It’s the festival’s sixth year, and Jerram’s Moon and Mars sculptures were shown at the first two, in 2021 and 2022.

Norfolk’s Economic Development Authority voted Wednesday to allow financial contributions to a regional fund aimed at landing nonstop flights between Hampton Roads and Europe, WAVY reports.

It’s the first public body in the region to take that stance since the Hampton Roads Transatlantic Air Service Coalition formed in February, and supporters called the vote the “critical first domino.” Airport officials say domestic carriers route European travel through their hubs, so landing a foreign-flagged airline will take financial incentives.

Meanwhile, Norfolk International will launch nonstop United service to San Francisco on March 31, 2027, its first year-round West Coast destination.

The Urbanna Oyster Festival wraps up its 69th year today, drawing about 50,000 visitors to a Middlesex County waterfront town of roughly 500 residents, Middle Neck News reports.

Saturday’s lineup includes the Virginia State Oyster Shucking Contest at 11 a.m. and the Oyster Festival Parade at 2 p.m., according to the Town of Urbanna.

The festival began in 1958 as Urbanna Days, and the General Assembly named it the official oyster festival of the Commonwealth in 1988. It’s also on WRIC’s list of things to do this weekend.
