Panel Pushes for Lower Blood Alcohol Limit

Richmond’s Safe and Healthy Streets Commission adopted a resolution urging the City Council to include a proposal to lower Virginia’s legal blood alcohol concentration limit from 0.08 to 0.05 in the city’s 2027 General Assembly agenda. The proposal is part of Richmond’s Vision Zero effort to reduce traffic deaths.

The commission has identified a lower limit as a priority since at least 2022. Officials cite research showing impairment at 0.05, with crash risk climbing sharply beyond that point.

Alcohol was involved in 43% of Richmond traffic deaths in 2025. The recommendation is not yet official city policy.

If Virginia adopted the change, it would become the second state after Utah with a 0.05 limit.

Worker Killed by Tour Bus at Wolf Trap

A worker was crushed to death beneath a tour bus in a parking lot at Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts on Thursday, hours before a scheduled concert by the English rock band Squeeze.

U.S. Park Police responded to the Vienna venue around 5 p.m. and found the man pinned under the bus. Police said a supporting apparatus failed, causing the bus to come down on him.

Wolf Trap canceled the 7:30 p.m. show, saying an accident had resulted in a loss of life and the performance was called off out of respect. Squeeze said the band was saddened and shocked and would work with the venue and promoter on a possible reschedule.

The worker’s identity had not been released.

Flock Camera Debate Widens in Virginia

Virginia’s continuing debate over Flock license-plate-reading cameras widened this week, as Dumfries voted 4-2 to remove its cameras while Accomack and Northampton counties published new transparency data about their systems.

Dumfries had planned to activate eight cameras, but the Town Council ruled that none may be installed or reactivated without further council action. Mayor Derrick Wood said residents wanted a greater voice in how the technology is used.

Over the previous 30 days, Accomack’s 43 cameras recorded nearly 229,000 unique license plates, 71 searches, and 181 hotlist hits. Northampton’s 34 cameras recorded nearly 172,000 plates, 67 searches, and 458 hotlist hits.

Both Eastern Shore counties retain data for 21 days, prohibit its use for immigration and traffic enforcement, and say the cameras do not use facial recognition. Northampton officials said the system has helped solve serious crimes and locate a missing elderly man with dementia.
