Police said former Hampton Councilman Randy Gilliland apparently killed his mother and then himself on Tuesday morning.

Gilliland called 911 to report he had shot his mother. By the time police arrived, they found both dead from gunshot wounds.

Gilliland’s mother, 86-year-old Patsy Gilliland, was suffering from dementia, and Randy Gilliland reported suffering from cancer and other ailments.

Gilliland served on the city council from 2002 through 2010, including two years as vice mayor.

More than 140 people signed up to speak at the Loudoun County School Board meeting Tuesday night, with many calling for an end to the county’s investigation of three boys who complained when a girl who identifies as male entered the boys’ locker room earlier this year.

It’s a travesty that three boys are under investigation right now for simply expressing unease about undressing in front of a girl,” one speaker said before she was cut off by the board chair.

Many in attendance also objected to Loudoun County Public Schools’ Policy 8040, which allows students to use restrooms and locker rooms that align with their gender identity rather than their biological sex.

The school system also prohibits recording devices in locker rooms, a rule that the girl in the locker room appears to have violated when she recorded the incident.

A close family friend of missing Morehouse College student Kyle Coleman told attendees of a vigil on Tuesday night that the 19-year-old has passed away.

Coleman had been missing since Friday night, when his phone sent an emergency message that his car had been in an accident in the Tysons area of Fairfax County. When police reached the scene, the vehicle was empty.

On Tuesday, authorities conducted a search and recovered a body from a retention pond nearby.

Fairfax Police have not identified the remains but said they are working with Prince William County police to investigate Kyle Coleman’s missing person case.
