Article Icon 1Minor Quake Moves Central Virginia

A 3.0-magnitude earthquake centered in Buckingham County near Dillwyn shook Central Virginia on Tuesday.

It’s the second quake in the region in less than a week, following a smaller event near Short Pump.

Shaking was felt both in the countryside and in cities, including Richmond and Charlottesville. Some doorbell cameras captured video of the event.

State officials stated that the Commonwealth contains three seismic zones responsible for most local earthquakes.

Article Icon 1New Laws Coming to Virginia

Many of the 53 bills enacted by the legislature this year and signed by the governor this month go into effect on July 1.

One of the new laws is the Save Local Pharmacies Act, which establishes a state-contracted Pharmacy Benefits Manager (PBM) for the state’s Medicaid program. The new law aims to support independent pharmacies and reduce state spending.

Gov. Glenn Youngkin also signed the Consumer Data Protection Act, which aims to limit children’s exposure to social media. The Attorney General’s Office will enforce the law.

Youngkin also agreed to regulations on the use of automated license plate recognition systems by law enforcement officers. The compromise law permits their use only under limited circumstances.
