Article Icon 1Tech’s President Will Step Down

Virginia Tech President Tim Sands announced he will step aside after 12 years. “Stewarding Virginia Tech as president has been the most fulfilling experience of my career,” he said, adding he will depart “in the coming months.

During his tenure, the university has added 30% more undergraduates, seen a 200% increase in applications, and a 185% hike in its endowment.

However, Democrat Sen. Tim Kaine raised questions about the timing of the move. “This action has the earmarks of previous well-publicized efforts to oust presidents at other Virginia public universities,” he said.

Kaine noted that the leaders of Virginia Military Institute and the University of Virginia were forced out last year, while the leader of George Mason University was also unsuccessfully pressured to leave.

Article Icon 1Naked Burglar Nabbed

Fairfax County police detained 21-year-old Sedrick Walker early Monday morning in connection with a series of attempted burglaries in Centreville.

The suspect was spotted by officers engaged in a stakeout as he was walking naked. Detectives used drones to track Walker into the backyard of a nearby home, where he was taken into custody.

A naked burglar was reported in and around five area homes between March 5 and April 1. During that final incident, he was unable to enter the home but was videotaped by a surveillance camera with a piece of clothing wrapped around his head and nothing else on.

Walker has no previous criminal history and is being held without bond.

Article Icon 1Hot Week Ahead

Record heat is forecast to build today across large swaths of Virginia and continue the rest of the week. Temperatures in the 90s are expected in many places tomorrow and Thursday.

Humidity is also expected to rise, making the air feel warmer. However, there is only a small chance of precipitation until Friday. The state hasn’t seen meaningful precipitation since Easter.

It’s been particularly dry this spring,” the owner of a nursery in Roanoke said. “Normally, I call spring the season of mud.”

Roanoke is enduring its fourth-driest spell in history since October. Amid the dry conditions, the Virginia Department of Forestry noted that the spring fire season runs through the end of April.

Unknown Number Calling? It’s Not Random

The BBC caught scam call center workers on hidden cameras as they laughed at the people they were tricking. One worker bragged about making $250k from victims. The disturbing truth? Scammers don’t pick phone numbers at random. They buy your data from brokers.

Once your data is out there, it’s not just calls. It’s phishing, impersonation, and identity theft. That’s why we recommend Incogni: They delete your info from the web, monitor and follow up automatically, and continue to erase data as new risks appear.
