Virginia Appeals Voter Roll Decision 

The state of Virginia asked the Supreme Court to issue a stay that would block a judge’s order that the Commonwealth must reinstate some 1,600 voters it has recently removed from its rolls.

“Not only will the Commonwealth of Virginia be irreparably harmed absent a stay, so will its voters and the public at large,” lawyers for the state wrote in an emergency appeal. The state asked for a decision as soon as today.

Gov. Glenn Youngkin issued an executive order in August telling state election officials to use information from the DMV to cancel the voter registration of people who may be noncitizens unless those people could verify their citizenship within 14 days.

On Sunday, the Fourth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals refused to overturn the judge’s ruling from Friday that Virginia is violating federal law by systematically updating voter rolls within 90 days of next week’s election.

Election Day is next Tuesday, Nov. 5.

Panel Nixes More Hunting Regulations

The Virginia Wildlife Resources Board voted to reject two proposals that would have changed the regulation of hunting with hound dogs.

Following the 6-3 vote, dog owners will not have to outfit the animals with tracking collars and will not have to demonstrate that they have made a reasonable effort to keep their animals off private property while hunting.

Earlier this year, the Department of Wildlife Resources implemented five new regulations around hound hunting, including more support and training for police, banning hunting out-of-season, and more community outreach.

In this case, though, DWR’s executive director said the board did not have the authority to implement the two newest proposals.

Virginians Hitting the Right Notes

Virginia is the “Birthplace of Presidents,” of course, but of musicians as well.

Singer, writer, and producer Pharrell Williams is “Happy” to hail from Virginia Beach, where he also founded the “Something in the Water Festival,” which is set to return next year.

Female hip-hop artist Missy Elliott was born in Portsmouth and still lives in the Hampton Roads area. To mark her musical contributions to the Commonwealth, Gov. Youngkin proclaimed October 17, 2022, to be “Missy Elliott Day.”

The Dave Matthews Band entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame earlier this month. The group started in Charlottesville in 1991. 

Finally, modern country music traces its roots to Virginia, where the 1927 “Bristol Sessions” recorded groundbreaking artists including the Carter family.
