Virginians Hitting the Right Notes
Virginia is the “Birthplace of Presidents,” of course, but of musicians as well.
Singer, writer, and producer Pharrell Williams is “Happy” to hail from Virginia Beach, where he also founded the “Something in the Water Festival,” which is set to return next year.
Female hip-hop artist Missy Elliott was born in Portsmouth and still lives in the Hampton Roads area. To mark her musical contributions to the Commonwealth, Gov. Youngkin proclaimed October 17, 2022, to be “Missy Elliott Day.”
The Dave Matthews Band entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame earlier this month. The group started in Charlottesville in 1991.
Finally, modern country music traces its roots to Virginia, where the 1927 “Bristol Sessions” recorded groundbreaking artists including the Carter family.
