Article Icon 1Heavy Rain Brings Flood Risks

A flood watch was in effect through last night for parts of Northern and Central Virginia, as well as the entire Piedmont and Tidewater regions. Heavy rain began Monday as a front moved over the state, dropping up to 4 inches in some places.

The slow-moving storm was what’s known as an “atmospheric river,” a system that can lead to flooding.

Appalachian Power reported that more than 3,000 customers in Southwest Virginia lost power as the storm pushed through.

In the Hampton Roads region, Dominion Energy crews began preparing for flooding before the storm arrived and warned people to assume downed wires are hot and stay clear if they see them.

Democrats will run a candidate in every one of Virginia’s 100 House districts this fall, while Republicans plan to field about 70 candidates statewide.

The fact that the GOP is already ceding dozens of races didn’t sit well with the chair of the Loudoun County Republicans. “We are headed for disaster in November,” Scott Pio warned in a social media post, although statewide chair Sen. Mark Peake insisted, “We’re gonna be fine.

Democrats currently hold a 51-49 majority in the House, and only four House races this year won’t feature an incumbent.

UVA election expert Larry Sabato expects turnout to be around 50%, far less than the 73% who voted in the presidential race last year.

No students were reported injured after a three-vehicle crash involving a school bus in Accomack County.

There were around 30 middle school children on the afternoon bus when the incident happened in Wattsville.

Three non-students involved in the crash were taken for medical treatment, including one who was removed on a Maryland State Police helicopter.

Virginia State Police are investigating.
