Article Icon 1President Pardons Convicted Sheriff

President Trump pardoned former Culpeper County Sheriff Scott Jenkins, describing him as “a wonderful person.” Jenkins was convicted on federal bribery charges last year and was due to start serving his sentence this week.

A jury found that Jenkins deputized people who paid him more than $75,000 in a “cash for badges” scheme. “The bribe payors were not trained or vetted and did not render any legitimate services,” the Justice Department wrote after his conviction.

In March, a federal judge sentenced Jenkins to 10 years in prison. “You sold badges to wealthy men,” the judge said, “…who thought they were above the law. Your actions undermined the public trust.

In a social media post explaining the pardon, Trump wrote: “This Sheriff is a victim of an overzealous Biden Department of Justice, and doesn’t deserve to spend a single day in jail.

Two hikers fell from a trail at Crabtree Falls into the water below on Saturday night. One was rescued, but the other died.

Nelson County deputies climbed down a 75-foot embankment to pull the first woman from the water. She had been clinging to a rock to avoid being swept away by the current.

The other woman, Taniya Flowers of Virginia Beach, was found unresponsive an hour later and never regained consciousness.

Crabtree Falls is one of the tallest sets of waterfalls east of the Mississippi River.
