Article Icon 1 Industrial Growth Powering a Megasite

Microporous, a battery engineering company, said it would spend $1.35 billion to develop two projects at the Southern Virginia Megasite at Berry Hill in Southwest Virginia.

Ahead of the Microporous announcement, the state held a ribbon-cutting to open 2.4 miles of Route 311 and provide easier access to the area.

The Megasite, owned by the city of Danville and Pittsylvania County, is the largest industrial development site in the state. The governments have invested $200 million in recent years to develop 13 lots on 3,500 acres.

The Microporous project alone will create 2,000 new jobs with an average annual salary of around $60,000.

The Danville-Pittsylvania Regional Industrial Facility Authority has also signed an agreement with Strata Solar to build a 55-megawatt battery solar storage facility at the Megasite to support industrial development.

Article Icon 1Turning Off the Phones

Students in Virginia have another month before they will be forced to turn off and put away their cell phones during school hours.

This fall, the Virginia Department of Education announced guidelines that defined “cellphone-free” education as “bell-to-bell,” meaning that students will not be allowed to use phones on campus, not even during lunch, study periods, or breaks.

The guidance implements Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s Executive Order 33, which he issued in July to help reduce the usage of phones by youths.

The DOE is also providing grants so schools can take steps to help families remove other barriers to education outside of school hours, including cell phone addictions and the mental health challenges that can be tied to social media.

The new restrictions go into effect on Jan. 1.

Article Icon 1The State of a County

Henrico County leaders provided their annual “State of the County” presentation, and they painted a picture of a country that is growing in positive ways.

“If we were a country, we would be the 99th largest economy in the world,” Economic Director Anthony Romanello said. Henrico officials also reported an 11% reduction in overall crime and a 22% reduction in violent crime.

In schools, more than half of high schoolers earned advanced diplomas last year, and Henrico is investing $17 million over the next five years in mental health services for students. It is also opening innovation centers in middle schools, and it has installed weapons scanners in all county schools.

Forbes ranks Henrico as a good employer. The county and the school system both made the magazine’s top 100 list.

The county also recently took control of the Cobbs Creek Reservoir, a $280 million project that doubles the available water in Henrico and is designed to supply the county’s water needs for the next five decades.
