Article Icon 1Virginia Reacts to Iran Strikes

Following the U.S. bombing of nuclear sites in Iran over the weekend, the Navy’s most advanced aircraft carrier, USS Gerald R. Ford, is preparing to deploy from Norfolk to the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations, which includes the Mediterranean Sea.

The Navy has rotated all but one of its East Coast-based carriers to the region. USS Harry S. Truman returned to Norfolk this month after a troubled deployment in the Red Sea.

Political reaction to the strikes broke along partisan lines. “President Donald J. Trump meant what he has said over and over again: Iran must never have a nuclear weapon,” Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin wrote.

Saying the attack showed “horrible judgment,” Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine wrote in a social media post“I will push for all Senators to vote on whether they are for this third idiotic Middle East war.”

Article Icon 1Drones Could Soon Patrol Beaches

Virginia Beach approved a plan to spend up to $1.3 million to begin a pilot program testing drones as first responders.

Say we have a certain call at the Oceanfront, Police Chief Paul Neudigate told the city council earlier this year. “Drones can launch independent of human interaction, respond to that location, get over top, and start relaying live video to our Real Time Crime Center.

Drones would be used first along the beach, but could eventually be deployed throughout the city. The program is not expected to take off until next spring.

Virginia State Police said two people received minor injuries when their small plane crashed in Fredericksburg on Friday afternoon.

The single-propeller TL Ultralight Stingsport suffered engine trouble shortly after takeoff and had to make an emergency landing in a field.

The FAA is investigating the incident.
