Big Beautiful Bill Impacts Virginia

The White House said that President Trump’s newly signed budget bill will save Virginia families in a median-income home with two kids an average of between $8,600 and $14,800 in take-home pay.

Meanwhile, the research group KFF said changes to healthcare provisions could result in 160,000 people in Virginia losing insurance coverage. Providers who treat those without insurance are bracing for an influx of patients.

 “We’ll have to make some serious decisions about who we’re able to serve,” the executive director of the Free Clinic of Central Virginia said. “We’re going to be the last option and last resort for a lot of people.“

Christopher Tan, President and CEO of the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore, warned that pending cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) may increase hunger in the region, since SNAP “can provide nine meals for every one meal that the Foodbank can provide.“

Youngkin Discusses Law and Order

Gov. Glenn Youngkin said initiatives such as Operation Bold Blue Line have increased police presence in troubled sections of the Commonwealth and are helping to drive down crime.

Youngkin also praised Virginia’s Homeland Security Task Force, which he said has arrested 2,500 illegal immigrants so far this year.

The task force wasn’t involved in the detention of 15 people at the Chesterfield County Courthouse last month by federal agents, but Youngkin expressed support for that action. “The vast majority of the people that have been arrested at courthouses around the country are committing violent crimes,” he said.

The Chesterfield Sheriff’s Office said that ten of those 15 detained were at the facility to pay fines for traffic violations.

Nats Clean House After Sweep

The Washington Nationals fired manager Dave Martinez and general manager Mike Rizzo yesterday, hours after the team was swept at home by the Red Sox to drop to 37-53.

The Nationals entered the month of June at 28-30 and seemed to be a team on the rise, featuring young talent they’d acquired in several trades. They have struggled since, losing 11 in a row at one point and posting a 9-23 mark since June 1 to drop to last place in the NL East.

Rizzo hired Martinez before the 2018 season, and the pair led the team to its only World Series win in 2019. Since then, however, the Nats have never won more than 71 games in a season.

“This is a pivotal time for our club, and we believe a fresh approach and new energy is the best course of action for our team moving forward,” Owner Mark Lerner said. Assistant GM Mike DeBartolo will run the team on an interim basis.
