April Amendment Ballot Takes Shape

Gov. Abigail Spanberger signed a bill to allow a statewide referendum, which is expected to take place on April 21. Several measures could be on the ballot, including a proposal to redraw the Commonwealth’s congressional districts this year.

Democrats published a gerrymandered map that will be presented to voters. It would give the party an advantage in 10 of Virginia’s 11 congressional districts. Most of the changes would be made in Northern and Central Virginia.

Republican Rep. Ben Cline, who would be forced to run in a reshaped district, opposed the amendment. “Gerrymandering is wrong no matter what state does it, and Virginia is so concerned about gerrymandering they put it in the constitution that we are going to have nonpartisan redistricting,” he said.

The Virginia Supreme Court could block the amendment if it upholds a lower court ruling that the process violated state law.

Measles Cases Reported

The Virginia Department of Health has identified six cases of measles in the Commonwealth so far this year. Five occurred in Northern Virginia.

The two most recent cases involve an adult who visited several places in Fairfax County and a preschooler who flew through Reagan Washington National Airport, both in January.

It can take 3 weeks for measles symptoms to appear. Anyone who has had two doses of the vaccine is considered immune.

Monks Cross Arlington

A group of Buddhist monks participating in a Walk for Peace from Texas to Washington, D.C., is taking their final steps in the Commonwealth this week.

The Arlington County Police Department said it will close roads today and tomorrow as the monks walk through. They are scheduled to arrive at Marymount University today.

The group has drawn crowds across Virginia. “It’s absolutely amazing. It’s moving, and it’s very powerful,” Alyssa Brown said as the monks walked through Stafford County.

When they reach the nation’s capital, the Venerable Monks will have covered 2,300 miles.
